Target Y The Eder Dam Raid, The Ruhr Valley, 17th May 1942 by David Pentland.

At 0154am, Pilot officer Les Knight in Avro Lancaster AJ-N transmitted the codeword Dinghy, the signal that the Eder Dam had been successfully breached. Although the target was undefended by flak, its location made it extremely difficult to hit. In fact, four of the five aircraft involved in the attack failed in their attempts and Knights was the last available aircraft carrying the last available bomb!

Donald MacLaren by Ivan Berryman.

The highest scoring Sopwith Camel ace of World War 1, Donald MacLaren was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1893. Joining the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 as a trainee pilot, it was only the following March that he claimed his first victory, a Hannover C-Type whilst posted to 46 Squadron. His kill rate was quite formidable for, in this the final year of the war, he was to claim no fewer than 54 confirmed victories. Indeed, in the period from 15th September to 2nd October, he claimed eight Fokker D.VIIs – a remarkable feat against Germanys most potent fighter. He is pictured here attacking a D.VII in Camel F2137 U of 46 Sqn. MacLaren survived the war and died in 1989.

The Berlin Airlift - Tempelhof 1948 by Barry Price In 1948 Stalins ruthless rule over post-war Eastern Europe was extended to a blockade of the land supply routes to West Berlin in an attempt to starve the city into surrender. The freedom of West Berlins 2 million population was maintained during 1948 and 1949 by a massive airlift of food, coal and supplies over the Iron Curtain and the will of Berliners not to capitulate in the face of Stalins Cold War. The Berlin Airlift - Tempelhof captures just one moment in the thousands of landings.

1938 Kings Cup by Michael Turner  Alex Henshaw in his winning Mew Gull, swoops low over Hatfield airfield, followed by Giles Guthries Mew Gull and Les Cliffs Hawk Major. Seen on the ground are Geoffrey de Havillands Tk-2 and D.H. Comet G-ACSS. The winners race average of 252.25 mph is the fastest ever recorded by a British winning aircraft.

Boeing E-3A Sentry by Michael Rondot  Bearing all the familiar hallmarks of his powerful atmospheric paintings, this dramatic winte5ry morning take-off portrayal of a Boeing E3A AWACS aircraft of the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force is set at Geilenkirchen, an area noted for leaden skies and long cold winters. With his masterly technique, Michael has combined superb detail and technical accuracy with an emotionally charged atmosphere that really captures the essence of "heavy metal" in action. Michael Rondot pays tribute to the multi-national crews of NATO E3s who have been involved in every major air battle of the conflict over the former Yugoslavia.

The British Grand Fleet had been virtually unopposed for nearly a century but now there was a challenge to the throne: the German Navy. Although smaller, it had caught up fast and by the time of Jutland, had some telling advantages over the British Fleet. the plan for the battle was to lure the British Grand Fleet into a lethal trap in German waters. In the event although desperately fought by both sides, the battle was a stale mate. the confused conflict was hampered on both sides by bad luck, bad weather and poor communications. at the end of the battle, the Royal navy had suffered higher losses in men and ships, but the German fleet never ventured out of harbour to seek battle again.

Scharnhorst was never to escape the clutches of the British and Norwegian forces for, having been slowed to just a few knots by numerous hits, fell victim to repeated torpedo attacks by the allied cruisers and destroyers that had trapped the German marauder.

The painting depicts the climax of the Zulu attacks at the defence of Rorkes Drift. The Zulus were unable to effectively penetrate the mealie bag defenses at Rorkes Drift, even though they succeeded in burning down the hospital, and peppering the storehouse with bullet holes. The confined space available to the British garrison caused a certain degree of physical compression, but this in fact worked against the Zulus, as it drove the defenders closer together with the result being that the volley fire from the defenders was concentrated and subsequently very effective at close range, as opposed to the spread out skirmish line type formation used at Isandlwhana. The Zulu attacks also became uncoordinated, being driven forward by charismatic individuals, but lacking the support of the necessary numbers needed to overwhelm the desperate defenders, who now appreciated that they were literally fighting for their lives.

Landing and taking off from the hillsides, rather than established airfields, this was extremely dangerous work which involved the pilot following the terrain and contours of the land that was being dressed in order to ensure an even distribution of the chemical. Australian-born Jim McMahon, served during World War II on B.25 Mitchell bombers before pioneering crop dusting and topdressing in New Zealand with ex-military De Havilland Tiger Moths which he converted himself for the purpose. He went on to form a company called Crop Culture, which specialised in aerial spraying equipment, both in New Zealand and in the UK, before becoming a partner in the newly-formed Britten-Norman aircraft company which produced the Islander and Trislander utility transport aircraft in England.
